WOF Failures in NZ: What Causes Them & How to Avoid It

Getting a Warrant of Fitness (WOF) check is a part of life for every Kiwi driver. But that moment when your car fails the test? It’s frustrating — and sometimes, a bit surprising. The good news? Most WOF failures are preventable.

At Mister Auto Tech in Wellington, we help drivers pass with confidence by spotting issues early and sorting out the repairs quickly. So, if you’ve got a WOF coming up, here’s what you need to know.

What is a WOF (Warrant of Fitness)?

If you’re new to driving in New Zealand or just want a refresher — the WOF is a regular inspection to make sure your vehicle meets road safety standards. Most passenger cars need a WOF every 12 months (if they’re registered after 2000), or every 6 months for older vehicles.

A certified mechanic checks all the essentials: brakes, lights, tyres, steering, suspension, and more. If anything’s not up to standard — boom, you’ve failed the WOF.

The Most Common Reasons for WOF Failure in NZ

Let’s break down the top issues we see all the time in our Wellington workshop:

1. Worn or Bald Tyres

Tyres must have at least 1.5mm of tread depth — and it needs to be across the entire tyre, not just the centre. If they’re worn unevenly or cracking on the sides, you’ll fail.

💡 Tip: Rotate your tyres regularly and check pressure monthly.

2. Faulty Lights or Indicators

A single blown bulb is enough to fail a WOF. That includes brake lights, number plate lights, and even dashboard warning indicators.

💡 Tip: Do a quick walk-around check the night before your test.

3. Brakes Not Up to Scratch

Brake pads that are too thin, discs that are warped, or fluid that’s too low? All can lead to failure. The WOF test will also include a brake balance and handbrake check.

4. Suspension or Steering Play

If your car pulls to one side, feels floaty, or has excess movement in the steering wheel, it could be suspension or steering wear — a common WOF issue, especially in older vehicles.

5. Windscreen & Wipers

Any chips or cracks that affect the driver’s line of vision are a fail. Wiper blades that leave streaks or don’t clear the screen properly? Also a fail.

💡 Tip: Replace wipers yearly — they’re cheap and make a big difference.

6. Rust or Structural Damage

Surface rust isn’t always a deal-breaker, but if it affects the structural areas of the car (like under the doors, around the seat mounts, or underbody), you’ll need it repaired.

7. Seatbelts & Safety Features

Frayed, sticky, or non-retracting seatbelts are an automatic fail. So are missing bolts, broken buckles, or airbags with warning lights.

How to Avoid Failing Your WOF

Here’s the secret: don’t wait for the test to find out what’s wrong.

Bring your vehicle in for a pre-WOF inspection a week or two early. At Mister Auto Tech, we’ll walk through everything on the checklist and let you know what needs fixing. That way, you’re not stuck scrambling for last-minute repairs.
